Ways to Save Money and Conserve Energy, Dilworth, NC Real Estate - Charlotte Rea Estate News
With people becoming more aware and more concerned about their carbon footprint people are searching for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and be more eco-friendly. There are several simple things that people can do around their home and at work that conserve energy and save money. 1. Turn down the heat during the winter months and turn up the thermostat on the air conditioning during the summer months. According to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, by turning down your heat by 2 degrees during the winter and up by 2 degrees in the summer you can save around 900 kilos or carbon dioxide emissions each year. For each degree you raise the thermostat on the a/c you reduce energy consumption by 3%. 2. Get a surge protector or an electric strip to plug all your devices into for each room. Before you go to bed or leave for work, you can turn off the electric strip which will cut power to all the devices and not feed unused electricity to them. The biggest items which waste the most power are laptops left plugged in, cell phones left charging, and appliances with clocks on them. Make sure to unplug your computer and cell phone when they are done charging, and unplug microwaves, blenders, etc. before you leave for work. 3. Buy energy efficient products. The up-front cost of energy efficient products is a little more, but the money you save in the long run on energy savings make it well worth it, plus it is good for the environment. 4. Make sure your home is insulated properly. This is especially important in older homes that don’t have a lot of insulation and have older windows that leak air. It is relatively inexpensive to have additional insulation blown in your attic and crawl space that will help keep the air that your heater and a/c have worked so hard to make comfortable in your home. The savings you see on your electric and gas bills every month will make it well worth it. Average savings of $274 a year. 5. Don’t wash your dishes by hand. The amount of water wasted and the damage it does to your hands make it worth it to use a dishwasher. A study showed that using a fully loaded dishwasher uses one-sixth the amount of water and half of the energy than washing the identical amount of dishes by hand. Try and find a plant-based detergent for your dishes. There are several other small things that people can do that have an enormous impact on the environment and can help save the planet. I hope you will do your part. From 7/15/09 through 8/15/09
